Archives for December 2013

looking ahead

IMG_1037

For all the wisdom of living in the now, of having only this moment, I am a guilty lover of the future.

Sure, this has its downsides: disappointment and a less than flexible-ok down right stubborn mindset, but I can’t shake the sweet allure of what could be.

With the new year approaching, I am lifting my weary holiday head out of the neglected piles of laundry and empty chocolate wrappers, and am looking forward to:

::telling stories with friends at our cozy new home: sense of story sos-button-v-2

::preparing for the newest babe to join our family. You know, folding and refolding tiny onesies, and knitting ridiculously tiny baby accoutrements.

::a possible move.

::setting intentions for seemingly impossible goals, like giving up sugar, and finishing neglected drafts.

::one last quick trip before the nesting really kicks in.

And through it all, watching my boys growing into themselves more and more everyday.

Morning Ritual

Writing along with Write Alm’s December Prompts

 DSC_0179

I’ve never been a morning person. Even when big kid turned up in our lives, he followed our schedule, staying up late, and sleeping until 10(!). But of course that couldn’t last.  He is most definitely one of the first chirping birds of the day, and with two other littles, well, I consider a 7:30 wake up pretty luxurious now.

Being slow to warm up to the day, I’ve created a little buffer of time for myself first thing. ‘First breakfast’ gets dolled out-quick and easy fruit or cereal, mama’s tea gets steeped, and then the people know it is my time, for at least the duration of my cup of tea (which can be enjoyed very slowly you know). Don’t think me cruel, this is good for everyone in my house.

This is the time when I catch up on a blog or two, and attempt to write something for the day. It may be for the blog, the book, or an article to send along elsewhere. Sometimes it is a scribbly mess in my notebook. Whatever the project, I emerge from my bubble refreshed.

I have come to love this quiet time so much that I have wistful thoughts of becoming one of the true early risers.  I look forward to the day when I can sneak out of bed at 5, without instantly waking a toddler, to have a solid two hours alone. For now, I take comfort in knowing that, even in the throws of raising littles, I can chip away at these projects one tea at a time.
